NaBloPoMo - Day 25

When I took my family out for dinner on Sunday to celebrate Thanksgiving, I made it very clear that they were free to carry on with their other plans on Thanksgiving Day. I like to try to make things easier for them. I know how much of a pain it is to have to bounce from place to place on a holiday, and nobody wants to sit down to two huge meals on a holiday either. I told them to stop by if they feel up to it, but with absolutely no obligation.

I figured I would need to at least have something on hand to snack on if any of them decide to come over. I was searching recipes yesterday, thinking of doing a small appetizer buffet, but then what would I do with all that food if they don't make it over or if they are stuffed when they arrive? I sure don't want a bunch of food to go to waste either.

Then I came across this idea for a Turkuterie Board and thought it was perfect!

It's fun, festive, not too much food, and all things that won't go to waste if I don't use them right away. Will I actually make it? Who knows. I did get everything I'll need to make it, but unless all the kids and grands wind up here at the same time, I probably won't. If they stop by separately, which is more likely, I can still just make a nice little charcuterie plate for them to snack on instead. Either way, this means no cooking at all for me - it's a win all the way around! :)

  6. That is such a great idea. I am not really an artistic person so I never would have designed this on my own, but I could manage something like this.

  8. That's adorable! My older daughter wants to make one but she's already providing WAY too much of the food for our Thanksgiving. She just can't resist doing overdoing. (and then stressing out about it)

  9. That is so creative and fun. It looks like it wouldn't be too hard either, but if people are popping in at different times, the only people who would get to really enjoy your work would be the first lot. smaller ones would work too though.

  10. Wow. That’s some turkey. I think some kind of charcuterie board is a good idea for possible drop ins.

  11. Oh, that's way too cute. And perfect. Perhaps you should focus on dessert-y items as they might be done with the main meal elsewhere?

  13. That's cute. Perfect for what you want too, I think. Easy to put away leftovers. I hope you have a nice relaxing Thanksgiving day, with or without drop-ins. Sometimes the best holiday is being alone! I was thrilled last Christmas to have the house to myself!

  14. Very creative! The apples might turn brown if you made it ahead of time, but otherwise it’s perfect. If they’re going to have another meal somewhere, this is nice and light. I like the idea of desserts, too.

    1. I'm definitely not making it ahead of time, not knowing if or when anyone will be here. I'll wash all the fruit and slice up the cheeses, so it will be quick and easy to put it together. I did get a couple of pies too, just in case. :)

    2. Some apples don't turn brown--my favorites Cosmic Crisps don't, if you can find them.

    3. Thanks, Margaret. I don't think my grocery store has them. I'm just going to toss them in a little lemon juice. That's supposed to keep them from turning brown - we'll see if it works!

  18. What a cute and practical idea at the same time, Martha. I love it! What a blessing that you don't have to cook for the festivities. Sometimes, it's just the best thing to have times of solitude in which to be grateful for all our blessings.

  19. Someone made something similar for our Bible study the other night, only about a third the size. It sounds like the perfect solution if some of them come, or even for yourself if they don't.

    1. If it's just me, I'm sure I won't bother making the turkey, but I'll definitely be helping myself to a plate or two of all the goodies. I enjoy snacking more than sitting down to a big meal.

    1. Ernie, be ready for things to get crazy once others are in the picture. The larger your own family and the larger the extended families are, the more difficult it becomes to schedule things.

    1. No, I didn't make it. We decided we would get together again over the weekend instead of Thanksgiving Day, since everyone was going to be popping over at different times. I may still make it when they do come over, but now doing the Turkey is kind of pointless, lol.
