NaBloPoMo - Day 24

Good morning, friends. It's a new week and time for my Monday Daybook. If you'd like to join me, I've put the list of the prompts in the bar at the top of my blog for you to copy and paste to make things a little easier.

Outside my window... It's a very foggy morning, 67 degrees. It's forecast to be mostly sunny today and warming up into the low 80s by this afternoon.

My weekend... On Saturday, I did a little cleaning and a bit of yard work, but mostly just relaxed, watched a movie, and caught up on blogs. On Sunday, I took a walk to the beach and then spent the afternoon with my kids and grands. We went out for a nice dinner on Sunday evening, which was probably our Thanksgiving celebration. We aren't sure yet if we'll all be able to be in the same place at the same time on Thanksgiving Day. I'm just happy we were able to spend time together as a family. The day itself doesn't really matter to me.

This morning... I'm just having my coffee and sitting here chatting with you.

I am wearing... Jammie pants and a t-shirt.

I am listening to... Silence at the moment.

I am thinking... Mostly about how to try to plan for Thanksgiving without a plan.

I am feeling... Tired this morning. I didn't sleep well last night.

I am reading... I'm still just keeping up with blogs this week.

I am cooking... No cooking planned for today. I have plenty of leftovers from dinner last night. I haven't planned anything further for the week yet, other than trying to come up with something for Thanksgiving - maybe.

I am watching... Over the weekend, I watched The Last Word with Shirley MacLaine on Netflix. I think it was from back in 2017. She was great in it, but I wouldn't say the movie itself was fantastic - still good and worth a watch.

I am going... To the grocery store this afternoon. I don't know what I'm going to get yet, but I need to come up with some kind of plan before I go.

This week... Everything is still kind of up in the air at the moment. Holidays get complicated with the kids all grown up. Now there are spouses and their families to consider. I have a busy day tomorrow, and then no other definite plans beyond that. I don't even have the girls this week. My daughter-in-law is a teacher, and they are all on Thanksgiving break now. I guess I'll just wait it out to see how things play out for the rest of the week.

How's your week looking, and what are your plans for Thanksgiving this year?

  1. It's a busy week! We have our kids for dinner every other year, on the other year they celebrate with the spouses side. This is the quiet year and we will be doing Thanksgiving with my sister.

    1. I like the every other year idea. I don't know if it would work for us, but it's definitely worth discussing it with my kids. I hope you enjoy your quiet Thanksgiving this year. :)

  2. I like that you have some time off this week to recharge, Martha, and only be concerned with yourself for a change. Sometimes, that's very liberating.

It often feels like our kids are the No Real Plan generation; many times things happen at the last moments. I kind of roll with it as best I can and tamp down my Perfectionism Gene. Hard to do sometimes.

Thanksgiving will be at Theo's house, and it will include his birthday (#2!) celebration with his other grandparents and an aunt and uncle who are flying in from the southwest. There will be about a dozen people there, and it will be...a lot. But we do anything for those we love, don't we?

    1. Thanks, Nance. I'm definitely happy to have the time to myself, and you're so right about our kids. I can also understand how you feel about your Thanksgiving plans. I was invited to the girls' other grandparents' home for Thanksgiving, which is very nice of them to include me, but honestly, it just feels like... a lot, as you said. I'm probably going to skip out on it since we already had our immediate family together to celebrate on Sunday. I hope you are feeling a little better, and I hope you will be able to enjoy the celebration. Happy Birthday to little Theo!

  3. That sounds tricky to manage grown kids' schedules at the holiday. It sounds like you have a great perspective on it and will enjoy plenty of good family time either way, but I like having a plan!

    1. I do like having a plan too, but that's why I set the plan for us to all get together on Sunday - this way, my kids can do their other things without pressure or guilt. I know it's not easy to jump from place to place on holidays - not to mention, who wants to sit down to two big holiday meals on the same day?!

  4. Even though my kids are teens, they definitely still have their own preferences on holidays & work schedules, college schedules, and one has a girlfriend that we work around & try to include as well. It does get complicated for sure! - Hawaii Planner

    1. It definitely does get complicated, and it's way worse once there are spouses and their families involved. It used to really bother me, but I've become very easy going about it these days.

  5. I am fortunate that all my kids will be here. My DIL’s entire family is in China (so they wouldn’t ever be celebrating our holidays anyway) and my son-in-law’s family has issues so he doesn’t celebrate with them on the actual holiday. And MiddleChild lives with us! I’m just glad my son and family are willing to drive 6 hours to be here!

  6. We will be staying home on Thursday with just the two of us. We will have our family celebration on Sunday in their home, so I will cook for that on Saturday. I hope you have a lovely time with your family. It is harder when they grow up and have other obligations and other family to visit with now too. Thanks for the recommendation on the The Last Word with Shirley MacLaine. I'll be sure to check that out. :)

  7. Looks like we're doing the same thing this morning. It's a good thing.

It's just hubby and I for Thanksgiving so it's a small meal. We're good with that.

Have a fabulous day and week. ♥

  9. We are excited to have Danny's oldest son, his wife and their foster child here with us on Thanksgiving. They are visiting from Florida where he is stationed in the Air Force. It should be a marvelous week for us. Hope you have a wonderful Thanksgiving, too, Martha, no matter how it pans out!

    1. Thank you! It sounds like you will have a fantastic time, Martha. Is Danny's son stationed at Eglin, up in Fort Walton Beach? I love that area. Enjoy your week and have a great Thanksgiving!

  11. It sounds like a relaxing week and I'm glad you all gathered for dinner over the weekend. Sometimes no definite plans lead to the most enjoyable times. Hope the rest of your day goes well. I'm team leftovers over here, whenever possible!

    1. Thanks, Ernie. The leftovers are the only thing I'll miss from making a big Thanksgiving dinner. I'm going to try to pawn some leftovers from the kids' other celebrations, lol!

  13. This is a weird time of the week--too early to get started on Thanksgiving, yet it's started preying on my mind. Although I don't have to do much of the cooking, I'm providing the tables, chairs and house for the festivities. I'm overwhelmed by the number of people coming--bigger than I'm comfortable with. But it will be OK!

  14. This year it's just my husband and me. Our son, who lives about an hour away, is going to his partner's aunt's house and has promised to bring leftovers. I may bake a pie and that's it. But, snow may be in the forecast Thursday, so we'll see.

    1. I told all my kids to bring me a plate of leftovers from their other celebrations too, lol! I hope you your son is able to make it for dessert. Have a wonderful Thanksgiving either way. :)

  15. Well, our Thanksgiving is long past but I hope yours is a good one no matter who you end up sharing it with. It definitely is hard getting everyone together on any certain day once they're all grown and also in-laws in the picture.

    1. I forgot that you had already celebrated your Thanksgiving, I hope you enjoyed it. I'm lucky that my kids all live close by, but it is still difficult to have them all in one place at one time, especially on holidays!

  16. My sister and her family are coming to our house this year. We haven't all been together for Thanksgiving for a few years, so this will be nice. However, now I must get my house cleaned and things prepared. Thankfully my DIL is going to roast the turkey at her house and bring it here so my oven will be free for the "sides". Thank you for your kind words regarding the loss of my sweet "Sunshine" today. That has kind of thrown me for a loop today, so I didn't get much else done, except I went to our Ladies' Bible Study this afternoon, which was a good diversion for me. Tomorrow I will have to clean floors and finish dusting, etc., so that Wednesday can be a baking day. I do hope you will get to do something special on Thursday with some of your family. I know it's difficult when they have their own extended families and they have to "be fair" to all. I remember those days of juggling between my parents and my inlaws. It wasn't always easy, and there were some times that we ate two turkey dinners in one day! LOL. Sending you some warm (((hugs))) and prayers for a peaceful and pleasant day.

    1. Thanks Pam. It sounds like you will have a wonderful day! I know there will be the lingering sadness of losing your sweet little Sunshine. Again, I'm so sorry. I know it is definitely difficult for the kids' to juggle everything, I try to make it easy on them by taking them out for dinner the weekend before holidays. That way, they can be free on the holiday to do whatever they want or need to without worry, and like you mentioned - who wants to have two big holiday meals on the same day?!

  18. No school this week, so I'm being lazy. Although, I ran a few errands today. I need to go and clear out some papers, should do it this week. Thanksgiving is going to be Friday as our host has to work Thursday (she's a nurse), so I got myself a frozen lasagna for Thursday. Just for me :)

  19. I've got my usual Thursday work on Tuesday, which is generally babysitting day but the baby and her parents are in another state this week.

Our usual Thanksgiving is us driving to my parents in NOLA (New Orleans, Louisiana), I tidy the kitchen, cook a meal, serve the meal, clean up from the meal, and drive back. This year thanks to a mouse eating a dishwasher drain tube, there's no kitchen as it was full of water and everything was removed. Rebuilding is happening, but slowly. Thus our Thanksgiving will be take-out from either a Chinese place, or maybe the Picadilly Cafeteria. Nowhere near traditional, but it will certainly be the most stress free and easiest Thanksgiving I've had in years!

    1. I'm happy that you'll have an easy Thanksgiving, you deserve that for a change. My backup plan is similar. If my kids' wind up here and want more than dessert, it will be Chinese food here too. I like the idea of stress free holidays. Enjoy yours!

  23. Happy Thanksgiving to you! We always have celebrated holidays on a different day until I moved to Texas to make it more convenient for other family visits. This year, same as last, will be a at my son's house and he will be smoking a turkey and my SIL is going to deep Fry one. I do love thanksgiving dinners and would always get a turkey breast for me to make so that I'd have plenty of of leftovers for sandwiches and soups too!

  25. It's nice that you got to get together earlier in the week. It really doesn't matter the actual day, just the overall vibe. I like how Canada does it the best. I have friends there and some days they do it on that Friday, other on Saturday and it's just more chill. I'm all in on the chilled out sorta thang.
