Sidetracked

If we received grades for blogging, I would have a D for this past week. I started out strong but quickly fell behind when I had my girls on Thursday. Friday was another busy day, and then I had the girls again all day Saturday and Sunday. I'm completely exhausted and have fallen too far behind to even make an attempt to go back to catch up with anything I've missed from all of you.

It looks like I'm going to have to change my blogging style - at least for a while. This is a busy month to begin with, but my calendar is piling up with extra days with the girls and lots of appointments and activities I hadn't planned on. So much for the simplistic holiday season I had in mind.

I've always been one to catch up on my blog feed reader before I post again, but after some thought, I'm going to have to just pop in to visit when I can. I'm not really comfortable with this decision, but unfortunately, I just don't have the time to keep up on a daily basis right now. It's either this way or take another blog break, so I guess I'll give this way a try first.

I would love to know more about your blogging routines. Do you just wing it? Do you post without thoughts of who you have or haven't visited? Do you keep up daily with blogs you follow? Do you use a feed reader or only visit or reply to those who comment on your posts? How do you manage during busy times?

I know, too many questions, but I would really love to hear any thoughts or suggestions you might have.

Have a great week. :)

  1. I don't think blogging should have any sort of pressure attached to it. Sometimes, I'm only able to post once/month. I find it takes me a long time to do my posts, probably because they involve a lot of photos. It's easier for me to just visit and comment on other people's blogs. I use Blogger feed, but if I've been away from the internet for a few weeks, I will post and then just go visit blogs in the order they comment on my post.

    1. I feel better just hearing you say blogging shouldn't have pressure attached. I know that in my head, but I do put a lot of pressure on myself to try to keep up. I need to learn how to let that go. I like the way you manage your blogging routine. I think that will work for me, too. Thanks for your input! :)

  2. I prepare my posts ahead of time and set them to post. I use Feedly to follow blogs and I do try to comment on posts, but sometimes I just can't get them all. Sometimes I take a blog break and am planning to do that maybe after next week so I don't have that pressure over Christmas. When I take a break and come back, I usually read other blogs but don't comment because I just don't have enough time.
You have to do what works for you, because otherwise you'll get burned out!

    1. Thanks. Mari. That all makes perfect sense. In the past, I've always taken breaks if I get to where I can't keep up, but nothing is going to change much for years now, with watching all my grandkids. I'm going to attempt to adjust my expectations for myself and just do what I can. Thanks for sharing how you manage things. :)

  3. You have plenty to do. So just enjoy the grandkiddies and we will see you when we see you. Good to know you are still in warm Fl. and busy. Have a very Merry Christmas season. 7. I blog when I have time. Sometimes it's two or three times a week, sometimes it's once or not at all. Life gets busy and things go on that take top priority. Don't burn yourself out thinking you have to visit everyone, respond to every comment and post all of the time. It just isn't possible for most of us.
I hope you have a great week my friend!!

  8. I post everyday using the theme of what holiday it is. There is one for every day of the year. I'm not busy like you are with grandchildren, mine are mostly teens now. Post when you can, it's supposed to be a fun thing to do. Take care and get some rest when you can! Love, ma.

    1. I agree, Ma. I definitely don't want something I enjoy so much to turn into a chore. I just need to let go of the way I've done it in the past.

  9. If blogs/blogging has become an obligation or a chore or is causing guilt, then it's time for a hiatus, I think. Writing here should be a pleasure, a hobby, an outlet, not a slog.

I've taken long, looong breaks in the past whenever I've needed to, for whatever reason. If I post every two weeks, then I'm doing well. I don't use a reader or anything, I just stop in at each spot every morning because I have the luxury of time to do so.

Please consider taking more time for yourself and resting more than you are right now. I worry that you are overextended. Again, remember the Oxygen Mask Principle. XO

    1. You're right, Nance. I don't want it to get to that point. I really enjoy blogging and have been so happy to finally reconnect with all my friends here. I don't want to have to take another break, but something has to give. I'm going to try to lower my expectations and change my blogging habits. We'll see how it works out.

I promise I am taking lots of time to rest. Sometimes I am a bit overextended with taking care of the girls, but it's such a short time before they'll be off in school full-time and busy with their friends. They are my world now, and I want to soak up every second of this time I have with them - even if it means doing little besides resting when they aren't here. XO

  10. I tell you what Martha .... I used to feel uncomfortable posting a blog and then not getting to get to everyone's. And that wasn't even all that long ago that I felt that way.

Now though, I post once a week on Wednesdays. I don't always get to get out to see everyone that day and I'm 100% comfortable with that.

When I get to sit and read blogs, it's often with a cuppa (like now), and I enjoy slowly getting around and reading. I'll read this post from you, and then often go back and see what else I've missed about your adventure.

Some reading sessions, I'll read up to four blogs from the same writer because that is what I enjoy doing and I don't even want to feel that rush to get stuff read.

I find now, it's important for me to get one post published per week. It's working very well and doesn't feel rushes, or hectic or any of that.

As a reader of your blog, I would rather you post a blog than worry about coming to see me. I'm here to read about you and I know you'll be about when you can. I think as writers of blogs, it's most important that we publish once a week or twice a month or whatever is comfortable.

But never ever to feel that we can't share a blog post we wrote, just because we haven't gotten out and about to read others.

That's a long comment. I hope it makes sense.

Just sometimes it takes time to find our groove and what works and even within that space, life changes. I used to always read blogs at Barnes, then we stopped going as much during the weeknights. And that's okay. Life ebbs and flows.

But always, always post your sharings. Regardless if you get out and about. Find a way to let that thinking go, I know it's hard, I was in the same place not long ago.

Happy Christmas and Huggs to you 🎄❤️

    1. Thanks so much, Ivy. What you said definitely makes a lot of sense, and I do need to find a new groove. The way I've always blogged in the past just isn't going to work for me right now. Like you, I don't want to feel rushed to try to get through everyone's posts; it takes the joy out of it. I will take your thoughts into consideration while trying to find my new groove. Thank you for taking the time to go into detail about your own experience and how you feel about all of it. Merry Christmas and big hugs to you too!

    2. You are very, very welcome. I've been there and I get it. The way I am now, it's just relaxing. I take the time, enjoy the reading and I post a weekly (and on the rare week a second post), and that's enough.

I think it just makes sense that what once worked, sometimes needs an adjustment.

Happy Christmas & New Year with huggs back ❤️

    2. Dear Martha, I would hope that they would understand and if they don't I wouldn't worry about it. On my old blog, that I had from 2012 to 2017 I posted daily. I had no computer for over 7 years and due to the amount of time that had elapsed I lost access to my old blog. So I started my new one that I have now.
Twice a week is good for myself and my blog friends because I give them a chance to catch up on my posts.

  13. I agree with Bijoux; there shouldn't be any pressure. Blog when you can and comment when you can. I use Feedly to keep up with blogs. There are ones I just read and don't comment, others I occasionally comment on and most that I read and comment on every post. It depends on my relationship with that blogger and whether I have any thoughts on what they've written. I don't have any set schedule for blogging; I have to feel the urge or have photos to share. Sometimes I'm a daily writer, or most often every other day or every 3 days. Your blogging can be whatever you want it to be. Now, rest up when you can!

I'll read and comment when I have time, but when I don't, I'm going to do my best to just let it go. I just hope everyone is understanding about it.

I'm one of those people who needs to ruminate over a subject I may have in mind and craft it the best I can to reflect God's "miracles in the mundane" as my byline states. I follow non-blogger blogs via email feed and those who are on Blogger, I simply follow them using that tool. That's how I follow you, Martha! I do try to visit everyone's blog daily as they come up. I will be taking a break the week after Christmas because family will be here. They come first! Blessings and just post when you can!

  18. What is your grading criteria? I hardly think you deserve a D.

My blogging schedule? I write all my posts on Sunday for the week. (If I can get ahead, I do, but last week this did not happen.)

For blog reading, I use Feedly. All the blogs I follow are loaded in there. I have my feeds organized into groups. (Some groups get "mark all as read" even if I haven't.) Ideally, I clear all my feeds daily, but usually I don't get around to checking in on Saturdays.

  21. I just wing it. I try to have something to say, but sometimes I just "chat". I answer all comments on my posts and try to comment on blogs I read regularly-usually someone who visits my blog, also. On a couple of bigger blogs, I'm a lurker. I don't have a huge following, so keeping up is easier for me than it is for you. I used to think about trying to get more followers, but that takes more work than I have time/want to do, so I am comfortable with my little blog world and the friends I've made. It's a good thing that I don't need to make money blogging or I would be in trouble.

Years ago, I kind of fell into to money-making side of blogging, and it was horrible, I hated it. Blogging became work instead of friendship and fun - never again! The thing is, I do have a lot of blog friends, not tons, but still too many to keep up with daily when life gets busy. I just need to find a nice happy medium with what fits right in my life for now.

  27. I love reading your blog and I personally don't keep up with whether or not people are always posting on my blog or occasionally posting -- as in I don't think, "she hasn't commented on my posts so I'm not commenting on hers." Does that make sense? I know how hard it is. I try to write a post to be published on Sunday, Wednesday, and Monday. I try hard to comment on most everyone's post in the Sunday group (smaller group) and I try to comment on about ten or so on Wednesday. I have a couple of people that I just follow and I try to comment a couple of times a month. I still haven't finished writing my posts from our October trip . . . nothing like stretching those out! haha!

    1. Thanks, Lisa, and I agree. I'm not worried about who comments on my posts and who doesn't, but I don't like missing my friends' posts. My usual routine is to go through and read all blogs on my feed reader daily, whether I post or not. I just don't have the time to do that right now. I've always felt writing is only half of blogging, and commenting on others' posts is the other equally important half.

I have been posting as much as I can daily, but it is usually a set kind of post. Mostly I do that so I don’t lose track of time and forget to post. I think I might start posting whenever the spirit moves me. Life is full.

As far as commenting- I try to read posts of blogs that I follow but I am finding that I might need to take a more relaxed approach to that too. I do try to read the posts of the bloggers who frequent my blog.

Not sure that helps, but I would give yourself a break. After NaBloPoMo I tossed around the idea of not blogging at all. I’m hoping after the holidays to find a happy medium.

  33. You’re so busy I understand how hard it is to keep up. I’m always getting behind in answering comments, and I love to get them. It’s the fun part of blogging, connecting, but I inevitably miss someone and I hate to do that but try to catch up eventually. Don’t be hard on yourself, when this becomes a chore, it takes all the fun out of it and I think most of us understand that life definitely has to come first. I generally blog every day but I live a very quiet lifestyle these days, body doesn’t work as well as it used to, I don't get out quite as much and this has become a hobby to me. At 75 I still enjoy sharing what I have been doing, which may be pretty boring, I don’t know, but it’s fun to read back and see what mundane stuff makes me happy, lol, and I also put all these things down so that my son can read it when he wants to, a record of what his mom and dad have been up to. I also love taking photos so that’s a great part of it. I generally answer my blogging friends’ comments underneath each post, but it takes a while to answer if I get behind, which is often. If you have to stop for your family and your own well-being, come back when you can. This is a long-winded answer and I apologize for it, but I don’t call my blog ‘rambles’ for nothing, lol! Have a wonderful rest of the week.

  36. Coming back to blogging in November with all the holidays to follow would be a lot for anyone, especially with the girls to watch so I commend you!!! Enjoy this time with the girls and family. DO NOT BE SO HARD ON YOURSELF!! This is supposed to be fun for you :)

I too used to be one to stay on top of all the blogs I follow first and then post. I decided several years ago to adopt my "own" style of blogging. I bookmarked the blogs I follow the "most" or favorites if you will, people like yourself and those I converse with regularly and have the most in common with and I check in on them more regularly than all the others. Then I picked a "schedule" that worked for me of the things/topics I like most - thing like Wordless Wednesday (I choose things that speak to my frame of mind), Homemaker Monday (my catch up for the week narrative), Cooking Thursday (favorite recipes) etc... and build my posts around that. Things like Wordless Wednesday and Cooking Thursday can be done in a scheduled manner even weeks in advance. Homemaker Monday is the glue that keeps me grounded and on point and then there's my favorites that change a bit each year like BLOGMAS.

    1. Thanks, Tamy. It was a lot doing so much at once. I normally would have taken a blog break after NablopoMo and the holidays, but since I had just returned, I didn't want to leave again. I'm just scaling way back for now. I'll get back in the swing of things sooner or later. I'm just glad to have reconnected with all my blog friends, like you! :)

  37. I have my regular set days. Tuesday is always my thrifted "treasures." I join a blog hop on Thursdays (postcards) and Sundays (stamps), and I host a Sunday blog hop (shadows), that I post on Saturdays because of it being Sunday then for some partipants! If I have a photo fitting, I will join in the Friday blog hop of Sky Watch Friday. That leaves me Monday and Wednesday to "wing it." I call Monday "Motley Monday" when I post, and Wednesday is sometimes Wordless. There are those other blog hops I do if the theme is something I have (like flower photos, photos with particular numbers, fun fotos, mono photos, etc.) I have a hard time visiting all the other blogs that participate in some I join in, as there can be many! I try to reply to comments I get. I admire how well you do, as you get SO many comments! I think we'd all understand if you didn't reply or visit, you have a lot on your plate.

    1. Thanks, Lisa. I pretty much memorized your routine during NaBloPoMo. I'm just keeping up the best I can for now. I'm sure I'll find a better routine after the hectic holidays. :)

  38. My routine is to post twice a week, but not on set days. I've slipped several months this year, but I seem to be back on track. I'm aiming for ten posts/month in 2026. I'm always happy when I post and just as happy when I blog visit to post comments.

    1. I don't have any set schedule as far as posting goes. At this point, I'm just making sure I stop by to visit anyone who comments on my posts instead of trying to keep up with my feed reader. It's the best I can do during such a busy time.

  39. I do kind of wing it. I decided long ago to limit my blogging time (and frequency of posts) to once weekly. Sometimes even that can be a challenge and I'll skip a week. I always figure blogging should be fun, and when it starts to feel like work, then I just back off.

    1. I have to agree with you on that. Sometimes I'm in the mood to post a lot, other times not so much. I'm just letting go of the guilt I feel when I can't keep up with others' blog posts.

  40. I really relate to this. When life gets busy, blogging can start to feel like pressure instead of enjoyment. I think adjusting your style makes sense — real life always comes first. The blogs and people that matter will still be there. Hope this new rhythm gives you some breathing space. 💛

    1. Thanks, you are so right. I was away for three years, and most of my friends came right back over with a warm welcome back. :)
