R - Rain

Florida is known as the Sunshine State, yet we have more thunderstorms than any other state in the country. We have approximately 100 thunderstorms per year, with an average rainfall between 40-60 inches. Our rainy season runs from May through October.

Photo taken at South Jetty Park, Venice Florida

We tend to only get occasional days where it rains the entire day. It's more typical for us to get the booming afternoon thunderstorms, especially in the summer. When the storms come through they can be quite severe, but they usually pass in a relatively short amount of time.

I always love it when we have a good all day rainy day, as long as I don't have to be out driving in it. How about you, do you enjoy rainy days?

More Florida fun for the A to Z Challenge on the way tomorrow!

  1. As long as I don't have to go out and run errands...raining or snowing is perfectly fine.

    1. I agree Angie. Of course we don't have snow here but I'm sure I wouldn't mind that either if I could be at home. :)

  2. If only the rainy season doesn't include the threat of cat5 hurricanes I'm okay with storms. But, I'd prefer sunny mild days.

    1. Isn't that the truth Anni! I prefer the mild sunny days too. We were lucky to have that kind of weather all winter and the first few weeks of spring this year. Unusual but it sure made me happy while it lasted!

  3. A rainy day now and then is nice. It slows things down and lets you feel like it's ok to relax and kick back. I hate when we have rain for several days in a row though.

  5. We very, very rarely get enough rain - and our average for the year is a fraction of yours. I love to see it, and I love the smell of rain washed air as well.

  6. I prefer the qucik and gone thunderstorms over all day rain, but we do need them to soak up water. for some reason 4 or 5 years ago we lost the afternoon rains, it rains on you and rains on St pete tampa but we get nothing. our yard is a sand bed. i try not to go out if it is raining

    1. I remember one year when it was like that here too Sandra. I worked in North Port at the time and it would be pouring rain when I left work and all the way down on 75. Once I'd get off on my exit the rain stopped. It did that for the entire year! I wonder if it's the same year you are thinking of?

  9. I do enjoy the occasional rainy day, Martha, as long as I don't have to drive in it. Since I've quite a few blogging friends who live in Florida, I am well aware of those pop-up storms you have so often in your state.

    1. I think one of the reasons I love them are the memories from when my kids were little. I would always set up the tent in our family room on rainy days so we could all camp. It was something to keep them from being bored and we always had so much fun. :)

  19. I have to enjoy rainy days because of where I live, although we don't get anywhere near the precip that people think. It's usually a drizzle and not all day either. I've been shocked by the torrential rain when I go back east or to tropical places. People always ask, "But aren't you from Washington?" Yes, but we don't have storms like THAT.

  20. I didn'tknow this either! I like rainy days as long as I don't have to go anywhere. But I hate lightening and thinder storms! Somethimes we will lose power, then lose all our food. But I bet you know all about that!

    1. We definitely know about that here Ginny. Luckily we usually don't lose power long enough to lose our food except during hurricanes when it's out for days at a time.

  23. Every time I have been in Florida, which seems to always be in the summer, it rained at least a little every day! I also have never seen rain come and go so quickly! One second it's raining and then the sky is clear and the sun is shining!

  25. I used to enjoy rainy days more than I do now, having been through a major flood caused by excessive rain and, unfortunately, soil not sandy like Florida's. I know I have PTSD even almost 10 years later - the sound of heavy rain is stressful.

  31. Yes, I love rainy days. They are beautiful to me. When Nel lived in Georgia, she said it rained almost every day in the Summer. It was more of a tropical rain and didn't last long. I always love when we get rain in California, as it is much needed. It used to rain a lot in my old town during the Winter/Spring months. Rain is a good word you chose, Martha.

    1. Thank you Sheri. I know rain seems to always be needed in California. Maybe you'll get a bit more being up in the mountains - or is that just snow that works that way? I seriously have no idea. Here at certain times of the year rain is more frequent inland, other times it's more along the coast.

  36. I love the smell just before a heavy rain. Here in Honolulu, it rains a bit almost every day. When it rains heavy, we get multiple warnings of flash flooding as the rain flows down from the mountains to the sea.

  39. I generally enjoy those afternoon 'boomers'. I believe we live more East than you do, away from the coast. Where we are situated we get those summer storms almost daily and I can see them coming from the back of our property which faces the everglades.....they are sometimes intense, but always pretty fast moving. Like you said, it's nice when you don't have to travel anywhere.

    1. It's funny, we lived maybe two miles inland for a couple of years and those afternoon storms there seemed way more intense than the ones we get here on the coast. There were also lots of times when I was coming home from work in the afternoons the storms along I-75 where terrible and once off the exit and down to 41 it would be bright and sunny!
