I never did make it to the estate sale yesterday. A friend of mine mentioned that it's best to go on the last day because they mark everything down 50%. I don't know if it's just for that sale or if that's a common thing done at estate sales. Anybody know? I'm learning a little bit at the time.
So what did I do instead? I was heading out to check out some options for renting spaces to open my very own little vintage shop. As soon as I left my house I saw the first yard sale sign. Oh boy, I really am hooked. If I see a yard sale sign now something happens to me - I have to pull over to check it out. I must have hit another ten sales yesterday, and of course I brought home more fun finds.
Is this little old school desk amazing or what? From what I've been able to find out about it online it's apparently from the early 1900s, back in the days with one room school houses. It stands all of about 2 1/2 feet tall. I just love this little thing! I should be able resell for about ten times what I paid for it - that is if I can bring myself to sell it. I may have to keep this one around for awhile.
I also found two great, giant, hand painted pictures - very tropical and perfect for the beach house.
I took the photo of this one in the garage so you can see the massive size. When I said they are giant I really meant it! I picked up both for one dollar. Isn't that crazy?!! I have the perfect wall for them at the beach house. It's a wall that has been begging for some over-sized art work forever.
I'm so happy with my finds this week! I'm also very happy to announce the winner of my guessing giveaway. Drum roll please... the winner is Carol at Old Glory Cottage. I said I would create the surprise package tailored to the winner's likes and interests. Well Carol is a self proclaimed obsessive collector of junk. How fun this surprise package is going to be to put together! Be sure to stop by Old Glory Cottage to check out all of her treasures.
Since giveaways like this one are so much fun, and since I'll be going junkin' in my own collections of stuff very soon, tell me what you collect and we'll see what kind of surprise packages I can come up with from my own treasures. You never know!

Those pictures are fun, and I LOVE the desk. When we bought our new house, there was a really old desk in a corner upstairs and I almost made them leaving it a contingency of the sale - but the seller was a jerk and probably would have made me do something ridiculous in exchange.
ReplyDeleteAs far as collecting, I love glass jars and owls. I want a huge collection of jars for all sorts of displays. I'm on my way with some great jars, but really want to get more into apothecary jars!
Hey Mel! I love the desk so much too. I know I'll never be able to bring myself to sell it. Thanks for telling me what you collect, I can almost guarantee a surprise package will be in order for you! It may take awhile, I have tons of boxes to go through, but I just know I'll find some things you'll like along the way! Do you like vintage or jars and owls too?
DeleteGlad you are having fun with it all. Your idea of opening a shop is something that sounds exciting. Hope you have a great Sunday!
ReplyDeleteThanks Ma. I really am having fun! You didn't mention it, but is there anything you collect?
DeleteWow, you found some great goodies. That desk is very cool and that art is great for a beach house. I am looking for original art for my house right now about that size and am finding it very hard to find at any sort of reasonable price. I am holding out hope of finding something at a yardsale or flea market.
ReplyDeleteI sure hope you have the kind of luck I had. I have waited 12 years to finally find what I was looking for that was within my price range - these were most definitely a dream bargain! I'm still amazed that I got both for a dollar!
DeleteYOU'RE HOOKED!! THAT DESK IS AN AWESOME FIND!!!
ReplyDeleteYep, I'm definitely hooked and lovin' it! :)
DeleteLOL I have been appropriately chastised.
ReplyDeleteAs far as collections for me, it's hard to narrow down. Growing up in an antique store made me a lover of all things old LOL. My favorites though are: serving dishes, cookbooks, candles, patterned glass jars, Christmas and Thanksgiving.
Glad you're having so much fun with your new found hobby.
Thanks for coming back to list a few of your favorite collections. I'll be on the lookout while junkin' adventures :)
DeleteI love seeing the great finds people bring home. I will have to check out your shop, let me know.
ReplyDeleteI don't stop too often to yard sales but I do like thrift shops. I drag my daughter all over for them...even like to go to Venice. I like to collect mid century dishes and kitchen items, linens, table cloths, Pyrex, and fire king. I have many milk glass fire king bowls from old stand mixers that I use all the time...for making dips, scrambled eggs, pancake batter and much more. I like refrigerator ware, platters, and Boontonware. Old Dove spice jars, the Dutch spice jars, and so much more. We should really go tags sales together sometime!
That would be a fun outing for a get together for us! I'll email you if I'm going to hit the sales again next weekend. Did you go last weekend when goodwill had the 50% off sale? I hit them all from North Port to Sarasota, it was a fun day. The Salvation Army family thrift store in south Venice has 50% off every Saturday by the way.
Deletecongrats to the winner! I have heard they mark 50% down on the last date of the estate sales and I have also heard from my SIL who is really into estate sales, etc., look for ones that are labeled as family run estate sales; a lot of times the companies that put them on charge more than the family run ones for items. When we had our sales we listed it like that and I think that's why we got a lot of people that came.
ReplyDeleteWe had two school desks similar to what you got here in hubby's parents' stuff. I think their's weren't as old as that one though based on the info I could find out about them so we sold them dirt cheap at the sale (now watch them be worth a lot of money).
It is fun to read of your finds Martha!
betty
Well Betty I know when I've had sales I have just wanted the stuff gone and hoped to make a few dollars along the way. I'm sure anyone who hits the sales and has a good general knowledge thought they were in yard sale heaven at my sales. I can imagine it was probably the same at yours. Sometimes it's just better to have it gone than to worry about the value.
DeleteWhat wonderful finds! I'm just like you, I love discovering treasures. I worked for some time in an antique auction house and loved the amazing array of things that came in to be sold.
ReplyDeleteI can definitely be addicting!!
DeleteGreat finds! Are you going to refurbish the desk? I love it!
ReplyDeleteI'm going to clean it up a bit and maybe polish up the wood but not a total restoration. If I'm going to sell it many people like the rustic, natural look these days. I can always give the option to refurbish it at an additional cost - all of this IF I decide to sell it. This will be a hard one to let go of.
DeleteI'd keep the desk...it's really cool!!!!
DeleteOh and to answer your question on my blog about the lobstah, I'm allergic to shellfish so I can't eat it. I was never crazy about it before the allergy, but I do miss shrimp and stuffed quahogs.
I think I'm more shocked that you found all of that stuff for around $30 than I am that I won! I know that cheese box is worth 3x that! Can't wait to see what you put together for me. I can tell you love the thrill of the junking hunt as much as I do!
ReplyDeleteI still can't believe the deals I got that day! In fact I've been on a roll ever since. I hope my luck continues. Congrats on your win once again. I am going to have so much fun putting your surprise package together :)
DeleteWhat a great find! I just scrolled down to read the previous post. Cute idea for a give away. Amazing finds for around $30. I'm not an avid garage sale / estate shopper, but on the rare occasion I have gone to some my luck is not like yours. Guess one has to be consistent at this game. ;-)
ReplyDeleteI was always like you Sarah. I can count on my two hands how many yard sales, thrift shops, etc. I had been in my whole life. I never found anything I was interested in and was just generally unimpressed. My mom passed away a couple years ago and left me with a huge house just jam packed. As I began my research and started learning the value and high interest of vintage items I saw yard sales and thrift stores in a new light. I've just started this new hobby a couple weeks ago and boy am I ever hooked!
DeleteEEEEKKK! Love that desk!!!!
ReplyDeleteMe too!!! :)
DeleteWow you really are hooked haha, and opening up a vintage shop would be cool.
ReplyDeleteThanks Pat. You can visit and maybe find a new hat - or a new cat! :)
DeleteWhat fun finds! I love that old school desk, too! Well...I like old FL souvenirs...you probably do, too! And I love shells and old school books. I have a collection of childrens books and my favs are the school books that I grew up with in the '50s and '60s. I know...I'm old! heehee!
ReplyDeleteActually I'm not much into old Florida souvenirs so anything I come across in my finds is yours! I am kicking myself for recently donating 12 boxes of children's books from when I was a child through my children's huge collections. I'm shocked at the value now that I've started checking into things. My Goodwill donation was worth a nice wad of cash! I just hope someone who really loved them found them.
DeleteYes Martha those vehicles get an urge to turn in at sales. Great finds and around here the prices at Antique sales go down on the last day. Your beach house is going to be sooo pretty decorated with your finds and at little expense.
ReplyDeleteI think my car has a mind of it's own! I know it's not me that can't resist a yard sale ;)
DeleteThose are great finds! Now that it's finally starting to cool off a bit here, I look forward to doing some thrift shopping.
ReplyDeleteHot as heck here but I figure my luck will be better with less people willing to get out in the heat. It's worked so far!!
DeleteI am in love with that school desk/chair! I would be equally as addicted as what you are - just not sure I would be able to re-sell anything!
ReplyDelete:-) Mandy
It is hard to let it go when you buy it because you really love it. I think I better start searching for things I know have value that I don't necessarily like - but that sure takes some of the fun out of it.
DeleteI love junkin' vicariously, so I'm glad you've bitten by the bug. Keep up the good work cuz I'm looking forward to seeing lots more! : ) Thanks!
ReplyDeleteThanks Laurel. Be careful watching, the bug might bite you too!
DeleteGreat finds! That desk is fantastic. I can see why you wouldn't want it give it up.
ReplyDeleteThanks Carol. The more I look at that little desk the more I love it :)
DeleteThat desk is so amazing! I've got a bunch of furniture from the 1800s around here. They don't make 'em like they used to.
ReplyDeleteThat's for sure!!!
DeleteThat desk is awesome! I love when I find antiques or vintage stuff at sales. I got a really cool 50's vintage scale for $5 and it's in mint condition. If I didn't love it so much, I could sell it on Ebay for ten times as much.
ReplyDeleteLucky you! It's too hot to hit the sales here in TX, but once it cools down, I'll be out and about again.
It's so much fun isn't it? Here's to good finds ::cheers:: :)
DeleteI don't collect much. I do like pretty cocktail or wine glasses. I have a cabinet in my livingroom and have found some pretty dishes (tea cup, small plates, large bowl) in shades of robin's egg to turquoise. I really like my latest antique find, a large canning jar filled with old marbles all in shades of blue.
ReplyDeleteI'm in love with your little school desk! Haven't ever seen one with the drawer on the side of the chair. I would find it hard to part with too.
ReplyDeleteLOVE the school desk! Awesome-sauce!
