The kids are all on summer break now, all the hectic end of the year stuff is done and over with. Tomorrow starts my ten hour workdays - dreading it! Usually at this time of year I can see the light at the end of tunnel with three weeks of ten hour workdays and then a month off, but not this year. The new job is a twelve month position, no more summertime freedom for me. I will be working ten hour days all summer long instead. Now I'm kicking myself for taking the job. The month off every summer was the best benefit of working in the school system. What was I thinking?!
No more summers spent living on beach time for me. It makes me so sad. It's something I've had to look forward to since I first went back to work full time after all the kids reached school age. At their ages they don't need me like they did when they were little, but I will still miss the time off.
As always, I will look at the bright side. I'll be working four day weeks instead of five, and most people who work full time have to work full time all year like I will be doing now. It is what it is. I'll make the best of it.
I don't know how much time I will be able to squeeze in for blogging during the summer, I'll be a weekend blogger at most. I do have some ideas swirling around so I don't have to take a blog break. I'll fill you in soon. I also promise to catch up on your posts soon as I can too.
Have a great week - Cheers!
Oh Martha I feel for you. I know you are much younger then I but don't over-do it. You are only young once.
ReplyDeleteI know Paula, that's why I'm kicking myself. I'm getting up there in age and that month off each summer was such a wonderful time of freedom and relaxation. No choice now, I took the job so I have to live it.
Delete(((Martha))) I know you did enjoy that break you got in summers past, but I do like how you are looking on the bright side; at least you will get three day weekends!! You blog when and if you can and don't ever worry about reading mine; I know you are an email away if there's anything I need to "vent" about so just enjoy the time you can with your family on your weekends!

Thanks Betty. I hate when I don't have time to visit my favorite blogs but it's always so good to know I have friends like you who will stick with me even when I go through busy times, blog breaks, moving from one blog to another, etc. That means so much to me!
DeleteWhen I worked I worked all year round like you are now but I surely did look forward to vacation days! I'd usually stretch them out so they made for wonderful long weekends. Hope you do at least get some of those. having a 4 day work week will help out. Hope your Monday is a happy one!
ReplyDeleteThanks Ma. It will be fine, and instead of the month off and no vacation time I am accruing vacation time instead. I will spread it out like you did and be able to use it as needed here and there. It will probably work out better in the long run especially now that the kids are older :)
DeleteBlah to that. 10 hour days would send me running for the hills. 4 day work weeks are great though.
ReplyDeleteHey Pat, I feel like running for the hills (or the beach) but just keeping those 3 day weekends in my mind and hoping for the best!
DeleteWow, 10 hour days would probably KILL me! I hope it goes well and that you adjust to the new schedule right away. :)
ReplyDeleteHey Liz,It will all work out. Of course after ten hour days my first day off will be spent trying to recover and then the usual weekend cleaning, laundry and catch up. It all works out the same in the long run. Have I mentioned I'd like to be a stay at home blogger instead? ;)
DeleteFrom one bright side queen to another...you can do it! Xo
ReplyDeleteWe Rock don't we? :)
DeleteGood luck on the new job!! I had one where they tried to force me into the 4 10 hour day schedule but I just couldn't bear the thought of being at the office for 10 hours, plus the half hour commute in either direction.
ReplyDelete45 minute commute for me - it sucks!
DeleteOh, wow. What a lifestyle change! I hope your Monday is a good day and the first of many.
ReplyDeleteWe have this change in the office ever year once the kids are done but it's usually 10 hour days for 3 weeks, a month off and then 10 hour days for another 3 weeks before settling into the new school year. I'm use to the changing schedule but definitely not adjusted to losing the month off in between - it's going to be rough this year!
DeleteTen hours is a long day, but you do have a three day weekend all the time.
ReplyDeleteAll summer long - but so tired by Friday that it's hard to made it productive or even fun!
DeleteI'm really hoping that you adapt well to the new schedule and still find some beach time as well as down time.
ReplyDeleteEven if I can slip into the pool at the end of the day for a few minutes it will all be good :)
Delete:( I'm sorry you had to give up your summers. So make the most of those three days off every week -- I know you will!
ReplyDeleteLori, I'm sure going to try! :)
DeleteWell at least you won't be doing what I'm doing this summer :( Hang in there the summer will be over before you know it and we'll all be back and the kids will be here and you'll be wishing for the quiet and the 3 days weekends!!
ReplyDeleteI'll give you that! I would rather work all summer than deal with what you have to! Sending thoughts and prayers!!
DeleteThanks for stopping by my blog today. Thought I'd return the favor and now I'm following you too!
ReplyDeleteGreat to have you here Kim :)
DeleteWeekend blogging works for me!
ReplyDeleteIt's so hard to squeeze in the time these days! Hope you are having a great weekend - cheers!
DeleteI know what you mean about 10-hour days being daunting. I did those for a while back in my full-time days and while the 3 days off were nice, starting the 10-hour days were almost more than I could handle. It does get easier. Of course, nothing makes up for not having that month off, but knowing you raised your kids to a point where they don't need you as much has to say something about your quality!
